New Poll: Cigarette Tax Hike May Be Doomed
(St. Louis, MO) — Voters in Missouri don’t look to be in a hurry to raise the tax on a pack of cigarettes. A new poll from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch shows that about 55-percent of voters don’t support the 23-cent-per pack tax increase. Just 43 percent of those polled said they would support a separate cigarette tax increase proposal on the ballot that would phase in a 60-cent-per-pack tax increase to pay for early childhood initiatives. The poll found 49 percent poised to vote “no” on the proposal.
