Community Safe Room To Be Built In Carthage
(Carthage, MO) — The Missouri Emergency Management Agency will cover the cost of building another community safe room to protect people in Carthage against tornadoes. There have been 13 tornado reports in the southwest Missouri city in the last 20 years and an E-F-5 tornado killed more than 160 people in nearby Joplin in 2011. The new gymnasium at Carthage Middle School is being built with 14-inch thick precast concrete walls and reinforced steel doors. The room will be able to protect more than two-thousand people at one time.
